Nach einigen einleitenden Bemerkungen zum Trumpism kommt Audrey Watters zu dem Punkt, den sie in diesem Vortrag machen möchte: Es geht nicht um die Frage, wie eine gute oder schlechte Bildungstechnologie aussieht, es geht um das, was die „Technologie an sich“ verkörpert und transportiert. Sie zitiert die Physikerin Ursula Franklin:

„Technology is not the sum of the artifacts, of the wheels and gears, of the rails and electronic transmitters,“ she wrote. „Technology is a system. It entails far more than its individual material components. Technology involves organization, procedures, symbols, new words, equations, and, most of all, a mindset.“

Vor diesem Hintergrund spielen bestimmte Technologien einer Pädagogik in die Hände, die sie „carceral pedagogy“ nennt, „that is, a pedagogy that draws on beliefs and practices that echo those of prisons — surveillance, punishment, and too often literal incarceration“. Das Gegenstück, so Audrey Watters, ist „education as a practice of freedom“.
