Der Urheber, George Siemens, versprach 2004 nichts weniger als eine neue Lerntheorie, legte aber in den folgenden Jahren sein Augenmerk auf die pädagogische Praxis und organisierte eine Reihe von Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). So blieben viele Fragen zur Theorie offen. MOOC-Partner Stephen Downes ist jetzt hingegangen und hat sich 44 Artikel, die 2018 in offen zugänglichen Quellen zum oder über den Connectivismus publiziert wurden, näher angeschaut:     

„This article surveys recent literature on the topic, grouping it into themes, and developing an understanding of current perspectives in connectivism. It surveys current perspectives and criticisms of connectivism, views of connectivism as a pedagogy and as a theory of learning, recent evidence supporting connectivism, and a wider understanding of connectivism as it is developing today.“

Er nennt seine Literaturstudie bewusst einen „Schnappschuss“. Sein Fazit: „Critics of connectivism may remain, but on the whole, it appears that connectivism, in 2019, is being broadly and usefully applied.“
