Der Artikel beschreibt sehr anschaulich, wie die Informationsgesellschaft von heute und morgen die Ansprüche an einige unserer Kulturtechniken bzw. diese selbst verändert.

„The challenge to us as educators lies in keeping up with an information environment that has changed dramatically in the past 10 years, a decade during which the very nature of information has changed in appearance, location, accessibility, application, and communication. Thus, it is crucial that when teaching literacy to our students, we emphasize skills that reflect the information environment of the present, not the past.“

Aus „Reading“, so die Autoren, wird „Exposing Knowledge“, aus „Arithmetic“ wird „Employing Information“, aus „Writing“ wird „Expressing Ideas Compellingly“, und hinzukommt „Ethics: Right and Wrong on the Information Highway“. Abschließend werden noch eine Reihe von Tools beschrieben, die die Herausbildung der entsprechenden Skills unterstützen können.
